A camera is one component in a capture system that also includes optics, support, lighting, power, and recording media. This page describes how those parts constrain each other and where the decisions with long consequences actually sit.
01The system, not the body
Camera bodies are replaced far more often than the equipment around them. Lenses, support gear, and lighting frequently outlast several generations of body, which inverts the usual purchasing instinct: the body is the least durable decision in the system and often the one given the most attention.
The practical consequence is that the lens mount, not the body, is the commitment. Changing systems later means replacing optics, and that is normally the largest investment in the kit. Before buying into a system, look at the full range of lenses available for that mount, including third-party options, and confirm the ones you will eventually want actually exist.
02Optics and what they determine
The lens governs the image more than most body specifications do. Three properties do most of the work:
- Focal length sets the field of view and the apparent compression of the scene. It is a
creative decision before it is a technical one.
- Maximum aperture sets how much light reaches the sensor and how shallow the depth of field
can be. A wider maximum aperture buys low-light capability and subject separation, at the cost of size, weight, and price.
- Sensor format changes what a given focal length does. The same lens produces a different
field of view on different sensor sizes, so focal lengths are only comparable within a format.
Stabilisation may be in the lens, in the body, or both, and the two are not always complementary. For handheld work it matters considerably; on a locked-off tripod shot it can occasionally introduce drift and is often better disabled.
03Support, power, and media
These are the unglamorous parts of the kit and the most common source of a lost day.
Support. A tripod is rated for a load, and the rating assumes reasonable conditions. Loading near the limit produces vibration that is invisible in the viewfinder and obvious in the footage. The head matters as much as the legs, and a head intended for stills is not designed for the smooth controlled movement that motion work requires.
Power. Runtime falls in cold conditions, and it falls further when the display and stabilisation are working hard. Plan battery counts against realistic conditions rather than rated figures, and carry a charging path that does not depend on returning to a base.
Media. Recording media has both a capacity and a sustained write speed, and the second is the one that stops a recording. High-bitrate video requires cards rated for sustained sequential writing, not just for peak burst speed. Cards are also a wear component with a finite life, and they should be formatted in the camera that will use them rather than on a computer.
04Where stills and motion requirements diverge
The same body often serves both, but the surrounding requirements separate quickly. Motion work adds sustained thermal load, sound capture, a monitoring path, continuous power, and vastly greater storage volume. Stills work weights burst rate, autofocus behaviour under unpredictable movement, and file handling.
If both are genuinely required, specify against the more demanding of the two rather than attempting to average them.
