Broadband and Internet Services

Broadband is the access link between a site and the wider internet. The technology delivering that link differs by location, and the differences matter more for production work than the headline speed does.

01Access technologies

Most fixed connections arrive over one of a few physical paths. Copper telephone pairs (DSL) and hybrid coaxial cable both reuse existing infrastructure and degrade with distance or shared-segment load. Fibre to the premises carries light over glass, which is why it is largely insensitive to distance and can be provisioned symmetrically. Fixed wireless delivers the last leg over radio from a nearby tower or rooftop. Satellite covers locations no cable reaches, at the cost of the round trip to orbit.

Two properties follow from the path rather than from the plan. Symmetry is one: cable and DSL services are usually asymmetric, with far less capacity upstream than down, which is invisible while browsing and immediately visible while uploading footage or broadcasting. Contention is the other: shared-medium access is sized on the assumption that not every subscriber transmits at once, so observed throughput can fall during local peak hours even though nothing about the line has changed.

02Reading a service, not a speed

Advertised speed is one number among several that determine whether a connection is usable for a given job.

  • Throughput is how much data moves per second, and is the number quoted. Ask whether it is quoted per direction.
  • Latency is the delay before data starts arriving. Interactive work, remote collaboration and live production are governed by latency, not throughput.
  • Jitter is the variance in that delay. Steady moderate latency is easier to work with than a fast link that fluctuates.
  • Packet loss forces retransmission and shows up as stalling or degraded live media rather than as a slower download.
  • Data caps and shaping determine what happens after a volume threshold, which may be an overage charge or a reduced rate.

03Residential and business service

Residential and business tiers can be delivered over identical physical plant and still differ in the contract. Business service is more likely to include a service level agreement with a stated repair time, static addressing, symmetric capacity, and a support path that does not begin with a scripted reset. Residential service is typically best-effort, dynamically addressed, and increasingly placed behind carrier-grade address translation, which shares one public address across many subscribers and complicates inbound connections and hosting.

Where a connection is critical, the practical answer is usually a second link on a different physical path and, ideally, a different provider — a fibre circuit and a cellular backup fail for different reasons, whereas two services riding the same local cable plant fail together.
