The physical form of computing has changed three times in a way that mattered, and each change forced a redesign of the software running on it. This page traces that arc and shows where purpose-built media hardware sits in it.

01From shared machines to personal ones

The first computers were institutional assets. Work was submitted in batches and results came back later, so the machine's time was expensive and the operator's time was not. Time-sharing softened this by letting several people work against one machine at once, and smaller departmental machines pushed computing closer to the people using it, but the machine was still something you visited.

The personal computer inverted that. Once a machine belonged to one person, the cost that mattered became the user's attention rather than the processor's cycles. That single economic flip is what justified graphical interfaces, pointing devices, and direct manipulation, all of which came out of research labs before becoming ordinary through the 1980s. Almost every interface convention still in use dates from this period.

02From personal to portable to worn

Portability arrived in stages, each gated on battery chemistry and display power draw rather than on computation. Laptops made a full workstation transportable through the 1990s. The capable smartphone of the late 2000s combined multitouch, persistent network connectivity, and a software distribution channel in one object, and in doing so moved the default computing context from a desk to everywhere else. Tablets, watches, and other worn devices followed through the 2010s.

The design consequence is a steady narrowing of the interaction budget. A desktop can present a dense interface because the user is seated and committed. A phone gets glances. A watch gets seconds. Software that ignores this and simply reflows a desktop layout onto a smaller screen fails, which is why responsive layout alone was never sufficient.

03Where purpose-built media hardware fits

The general-purpose device is a compromise. Live production, broadcast, and immersive capture push against that compromise in specific places: sustained throughput, uninterrupted power, local storage close to the capture point, and network availability at locations that have none.

The DFX hardware collection is organized around exactly those pressure points. As published, it covers Archway, Stargate, and Astro G on the broadcast and connectivity side, CyberPack for mobile power, DataCore for combined storage and power, and Memory and Speed as module extensions. Astro G is described as the flagship of the line.

Treat availability carefully. The changelog records hardware collection integration landing in the platform in February 2026, and the roadmap lists the Hardware Collection as in progress rather than shipped. Integration in software and a device you can buy are different claims, and the published material only supports the first.
